German News from the Beginner group

We went to the Porta-Cabin kitchen to make Weckmänner after the St. Martin's Day Assembly.  The Weckmann is a sweet bread shaped like a person, with raisins for eyes.  If you visit http://www.labbe.de/ and search for Weckmann, you will find the recipe we used and some background information in German.

Here is the recipe in English for about twenty small Weckmänner (or one really big Weckmann!):

Combine 500g flour, 100g sugar, two eggs and a pinch of salt in a mixing bowl

In a small pot, heat 125 mL milk and 200g butter until the butter melts.  Remove from heat, let the mixture cool a bit and then stir in 30g of yeast.

Mix the liquid with the other ingredients and knead well.

Let the dough rise for about thirty minutes.

Shape the dough and use raisins for eyes, buttons etc.

Mix four tablespoons of milk with an egg yolk to glaze the Weckmänner before baking at 200 degrees Celsius for about 20 minutes.

Happy Baking and Guten Appetit!
