This is the first entry on the blog posted by a student. I would like to encourage each student to consider posting a blog entry in the future.
In school today 5.3 did the 1 minute silence.
The 1 minute silence is a thing they do all around the world. In England on the 11th of the 11th at the 11th hour they stop everything and stand still in silence for 1 minute.
In class we have this website called ‘Edmodo’ and I put a question on to Mrs.Fiddimore. Mrs.Fiddimore passed this on to Mrs.Coffey, the Deputy Principal. She thought this was a lovely idea to do, so she went to a meeting and suggested it. Unfortunately it was too late when she got to the meeting so we did it in our own classroom.
Remembrance Day is also called Poppy day and the reason all the English wear Poppies is because when the war was over all the fields started to grow Poppies. Some people wear white Poppies and that means they are looking forward to peace as well as remembering the past.
All around the world the different countries do different things for, sometimes, different reasons and, sometimes, different times. Germany has its remembrance day on the Sunday closest to the 16th of November, in Hong Kong the have a memorial service and in Holland they remember on the 4th of May and lay flowers on tombs of unknown soldiers.

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the discussions we had about remembering people and I felt very proud at the way the whole class stood in silence for so long. What does everyone else think about it?
ReplyDeleteMy daddy had his own remembrance day parade outside the training school for all new firefighters. He stood there amongst 200 firefighters in full uniform respectfully observing the 2 minute silence.
