Maths Workshop

Thank you to all of you who were able to come to our Maths Workshop. As I explained, the workshop is a snapshot of what happens during Maths in our classroom.

Today we started with some quick mental maths:

We use the stick to think about where we find numbers on the number line. I use the stick to represent numbers from 0 to 100, 0 to 1000, 0 to 10,000, 0 to 100,000 and 0 to 1. It supports the children with their understanding of the base 10 number system and encourages them to see patterns within numbers.

We use the flapjack to explore fractions, decimals and percentages. We look at equivalence, at simplifying fractions and a simple form of addition and subtraction of fractions.



The "Follow Me" game is a quick game where the children race to complete 20 equations. In each child's Maths pack they have either dominoes or "Follow Me" loop cards that they have designed for themselves. This enables me to differentiate between the differing abilities within the classroom and ensures that children devise games that challenge themselves.

The children really enjoyed working with parents and other adults who visited.

Mr. Coffey, the Senior School Principal, visited and played a few fraction games.



Mr. Preston, a Maths teacher from 6th grade, visited too and spent time playing some fraction games.

The children will bring their Maths packs home on Thursday. If you would like to play the games with them, please do. Please return the Maths packs to school on Tuesday 15th March.
