Our first week back after Ski Week

We have a had a very busy week this week and the children have worked hard. At the bottom of this post is an explanation about why these girls have red noses today!

Maths.
Our focus in Maths has been two-fold. In Number the children have been using the four operations to solve problems. They have also made a start on our Measurement and Shaoe Unit. Using measuring tools, methods and skills to solve real life problems related to shape and measurement, the children are working in groups (or companies) to create a plan for moving resources in our room to another room. The 'company' with the winning bid will be the one that uses the minimum amount of standard size boxes.

In our PYPX the children have made great strides forward this week. They are in the midst of posting their transdisciplinary themes, their central ideas, lines of inquiry and inquiry questions onto oue PYPX blog (http://www.fiddi5pypx.blogspot.com/) They have met with their mentors to recount and reflect on their process so far, and to discuss how they intend to move forward.

A key point of learning is good quality assessment. Assessment helps me plan for the children's learning and it is important that the children, not only know on what they are being assessed but that they work together with me, to construct their assessment criteria. This week all of 5th grade came together to co construct the assessment criteria for PYPX. These criteria were constructed within the 5 elements of PYP: Knowledge, Concepts, Attitudes. Skills and Action. Children worked together in mixed groups before feeding back to the whole 5th grade.

Children used the student roles and exhibition criteria pages to sort ideas according to the 5 elements.

They discussed how they could self assess, peer assess and be assessed by the teachers.



In class today we drew up our co constructed criteria. These will be posted on the blog next week.

A key component of the PYPX is action. The children are thinking carefully about the action they might take and how they can make a difference. In the UK today it is red nose day; well known comedians take action to raise money for people living in poverty, both overseas and in the UK. We thought we would highlight the action taken and share a bit of British culture with the children. Some children came with red noses painted on! We made a red nose biscuit too!
