Collaborating, data handling and backward design.

This week, in Maths, we have focused upon data collecting, data handling and creating graphs. Today we collected information to help us build a line graph on Monday. On the hour and half hour we counted the number of people in the room and on Monday we will plot our results to produce a line graph.

As part of our unit of Inquiry the children are developing their understanding of video techniques. They are preparing to make a 1 minute video about something that helps with communication and learning. A variety of technologies have been chosen and the children have researched, and are researching, data to support their videos. Next week they will learn how to edit thier videos. As teachers, we use Grant Wiggins 'Backward Design' to plan and assess the children's work. I have amended the planning sheet and the children are using it to guide themselves through their video process, asking themselves such questions as "What will the viewers understand from our video?", "What do we want them to know and learn?" Through working on the video they are also developing their literacy and communication skills.
