As I was reading news online today I came across the following article on the BBC news website ( I apologise for the title of the article!):
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-11258175
Although it is written in regard to the Maths Curriculum followed in England and Wales, it makes some very important points about multiplication and division, that are key to the way the children in our school learn.
The author, Rob Eastaway, makes the essential point that,
"The emphasis has moved away from blindly following rules to techniques a child can understand”.
This is exactly the thinking behind our PYP Maths Curriculum and our Maths programme 'Investigations'. There is a video within the article that shows some of the strategies children are encouraged to use to solve multiplication problems.
I hope you enjoy it! Best wishes, Natalie Fiddimore.
