This allowed the children to analyse and reason about the editing marks and how they are used. The children had a go at editing a piece of text written by me with deliberate mistakes! Thinking about the edit marks and how we use them will help them as they work through their writing this year. It will help them to develop their proof reading skills and encourage them to think more carefully about punctuation and spelling.
The children have continued to develop their understanding of Volume. They have been building models of different dimensions with the same Volume, drawing accurate nets for boxes and building them and building boxes to fit certain items.
This afternoon, as a bit of extra fun, they worked together to see how many squares there are on a chess board. Some groups worked using a method to solve the problem, others developed a formula. I won't tell you how many squares there are but maybe your child will!
As part of our unit of inquiry the children have chosen a material to research. They have chosen from wood, metals, plastic, parrafin wax, rubber, glass and stone. They have found information from various sources, such as books, websites and from each other, and are in the process of writing up an information report. The report is factual and will contain a glossary. There is also a section where the children will record their sources of information.
Both Mrs. Nicholson and I are really pleased with the way that the class have settled in. They are a friendly group of people who are engaged in their learning and who take responsibility for the classroom environment (a key point of Unit 1). Today we played a quick game of 'Monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, elephant'. It's a great family game too. Ask your child about it.
