Learning through taking responsibility.

Today the children worked through a series of activities that they managed themselves.

1. Having written a recount yesterday (according to a time plan where proofreading and correcting was an essential part of their work) the children were asked to check through any further corrections today.

2. They were also asked to continue with, and attempt to complete, their individual information reports on their research into a chosen material.







The children used dictionaries to help them in the Glossary section of their information reports.



The children researched information about their chosen material from books in the library, websites and from talking to each other.


 3. They were also expected to read quietly for 15 minutes.

4. They also were asked to begin to collect together items of work that they would like to go into their Portfolios.

The children select work for their portfolio, reflect and  justify the reasons for inclusion in the Portfolio.

5. In Maths they were asked to use their growing skills and understanding of Volume and Capacity to develop an idea that we could put into practice for the classroom. In Maths it is important that the children relate concepts to the 'real world'. The children used metre sticks and tapes to measure our outside window sills and plan window boxes (flower boxes) for them. This will continue with them ascertaining the amount of soil the boxes will hold. In the coming days and weeks children will be able to link this to our current unit of Inquiry and find a material suitable for use for a flower box.

The children were expected to prioritise the work they needed to do and to work with focus. They managed their own time-keeping and the order in which they worked. They worked individually at times and collaboratively at other times during the day. Everyone was able to do this; it is a key skill.

Tomorrow some of these activities will continue, some of the activities will be further developed and some new activities will be introduced.
