Friday!

Maths.

This week we have continued to work on Volume and 3D shapes. Today we worked with pyramids, cylinders, cones and rectangular prisms. Solids were paired together and we used sand to find the volume of the larger solid compared to the smaller solid.

We recorded our findings on a chart and compared results.

We found that most of the larger solids held 3 times as much sand as the smaller solids. The cylinder, above, held 3 times as much sand as the cone or, in more Mathematical terms the volume of the cylinder was 3 times the volume of the cone. Many were surprised by this as the base and height of each solid was the same. Mmmm: watch this space as we find out more!

Portfolios. 

The class have also been adding to their portfolios. As they choose work to go into their portfolios they are reflecting on their learning and justifying why they want each piece of work included.

Today we talked again about the purpose of our portfolios and went on to discuss how each student would like their parents to feedback to them about their portfolios and their learning. We talked about praise, about constructive criticism and about the need for each child to explain their work carefully to their parents. Each child is designing a feedback form specifically for their own parents. This can be completed during the portfolio session in the child's mother tongue.

 

The portfolio session is next Thursday (4th November, from 8.50 - 9.30).

How The World Works.

Our unit of inquiry has been great fun and we have spent a lot of time considering how we can use the properties of materials (and classroom equipment) to help in our inventions.

Elise has made this fabulous waterproof skirt for use on the climbing bars on wet days.

Aurelie and her partner planned this window box, measuring accurately. It looks great!

Gavin, Berend and Kelvin had a great idea for a noisy alarm clock. They needed to constantly revise their plan, analysing how they could improve it and thinking creatively to solve their problems.

Dennis, Jorge and Lia quickly found a way of turning on a tap from a distance. Last week Mrs. Coffey challenged them to turn it off remotely also! The group spent time reasoning how they could do this and then yesterday...success!

We have had a great week. Have a lovely 3 day weekend.
