Tuesday and Grade 5.3

Phew! The children have been busy! In our unit of Inquiry 'How the World Works' the class have continued to work on their inventions, planning and developing their ideas. The class have spent time analysing their thoughts and inventions; they have thought diversely and used creative thinking to solve problems that arose. They have also shown perseverance and motivation.

In Maths the class have been building solids: a cone, triangular pyramid, rectangular pyramid, cylinder and rectangular prism. They have made more than one of each shape and will compare their Volume later this week.

Today we looked at some amazing facts and then came up with some amazing facts about rectangular pyramids and cylinders. The answers dealt with the important mathematical facts: Rectangular prisms have 5 faces, 4 vertices, 1 rectangle and 4 triangles, for example. They dealt with everyday facts: We use cylinders a lot. Coke cans are cylinders. They included more unusual facts: rectangular pyramids can be used to stop cattle from crossing boundaries (a useful interpretation of the properties of a rectangular pyramid!)
